Dengue – A Deadly Disease
Dengue Fever is a very old disease. Its outbreak is seen largely in Latin America, Africa and South East Asia. Every year a large number of people die of Dengue. This fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Dengue is spread by several species of female mosquitoes of the Aedes genus, principally Aedes aegypti. The symptoms of Dengue fever are high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin itching and skin rash. They begin under three to fourteen days after infection. For detection of Dengue a number of tests are available. Recovery generally takes two to seven days. A vaccine for dengue fever has been approved and is commercially available in a number of countries. In case of dengue hemorrhagic fever proper treatment should be made in consultation with physician. To prevent this deadly disease, steps should be taken to stop stagnation of water in drains, ditch or any type of open container which are the breeding places of mosquitoes. Insecticides like DDT, Malathion must be spread at proper intervals. Mosquito-nets should be used at the time of sleeping. For controlling Dengue anti-dengue drive should be taken by the Govt. and and NGOs.
