Maulana Abul Kalam Azad
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad is a very significant figure in India’s freedom struggle. He was a prominent leader of Indian National Congress and elected the president of Indian National Congress in 1923 and also 1940. His real name was Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin but became known as Maulana Azad. This popular leader was born 11th November, 1888. He was also a significant writer, poet and journalist. He had composed his poetry in Urdu. He protested against British Raj through his writings. Some of the books were like throwing a stir in the society at that time. Example of such books are: ‘India wins Freedom’, ‘Ghubar-e-Khatir’ etc. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Gandhiji’s ideas. He believed that Gandhiji’s ideals would bring freedom back to India. He became India’s first education minister after independence. So, his birthday has been celebrated as National Education Day till now. We had lost this great man on 22nd February, 1958. He is still alive in our hearts in his works.
